She describes her personal tastes as ranging from simple, delicate and feminine to daring cutting edge - Nature meets Prada!Past designs have ranged from beautifully cut simple styles through to more elaborate corsetted, beaded, embroidered, ruched, appliqued, hand-painted designs, often using London's leading specialist companies - including beaders to the Queen.Nikki enjoys a love of being hands on with each client rather than aiming for mass market which ensures each client higher exclusivity and a totally personal service, and is recommended by London's leading wedding planners.When Julia was younger she wanted to be a balloon.Unfortunately that dream fell through and now she is a freelance illustrator and animator based in East London. Her work tends to explore the motivations behind human relationships, representing characters as mildly ridiculous anthropomorthic animals.Her work can be found in many different formats, including prints, self published books, bags, laptop skins, pillows, wallpaper, aprons and film.Currently completing an MA in Animation at the RCA, she is also part of the animation collective Treat Studios, and is signed as an animation director to Picasso Pictures.
Her clients include The Decemberists, E4, Skins, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, Of Montreal, Malibu Rum, It's Nice That, Picador and Chronicle Books.
Along with trendy fashion shows and window displays, she secured her reputation through the production of original clothing, sold in affordable boutiques, for the new youth-orientated market.
Following on the success of the first Chelsea store, a second Bazaar opened in Knightsbridge in 1961. By 1963 Mary was exporting to the US, going into mass-production to keep up with the demand, and the Mary Quant worldwide brand was born.
The mid 60s saw her at the height of her fame, when she created the micro-mini and the 'paint box' make-up of 1966, and added the shiny, plastic raincoats and little grey pinafore dresses that came to epitomise the 60's fashion era. She expanded her brand further into a range of original patterned tights, a range of cosmetics and other fashion accessories.
Quant has claimed that she did not invent the mini skirt but rather the girls who visited her shops did as they wanted them shorter and shorter. These skirts were also in development by other designers but Quant is the name most associated with them. She even named the garments after her favourite make of car - the Mini.
